monotypes fix everything

I’ve been feeling stuck lately. Part of it is because I’ve been doing some paid work that is eating my brain (and soul) and part of it is because I’m getting tired of my current work and want to head in another direction. Starting is hard; I want everything to turn out perfectly the first time, even though I know that that’s impossible.

So, I’ve been spinning my wheels and waiting, which is not a good thing to do. I’m convinced that producing crap that you throw out is better than producing nothing at all. Something will eventually stick. While I was spinning and waiting, I discovered this mixed media set by Amy Schimler, an illustrator and fabric designer. I love the imperfections and ease of everything in the set. It’s the most inspiring thing I’ve seen in a while and it reminded me of how much I like monotypes. Since I like monotypes and they lend themselves so well to experimentation, I made some yesterday afternoon. If you click on the photo below, it’ll take you to the Flickr page. I’ve made notes on the photo about how I produced each print.

Playing Around

I’m not done with three of these yet. I need to add some colour and some other media. I’ll keep you updated on how these turn out.

Hey Zh - Still down with my computer woes - but stopping in for a bit to check emails and such.
I really like these monoprints… and especially the touch of color here and there. Most importantly that you are aware in the moment and following your instincts. That is all we can and must do.
