The weekend was the best sort of blur possible: we had a friend in from Toronto, there was sun, weather warm enough to create slush, a concert by a different friend, an evening visit by my in-laws, and dim sum with a buddy in what may very well be the world’s smallest and most desolate Chinatown. Ah, Winnipeg, I don’t know how much longer we’re going to last here.
Dim sum, which we didn’t manage to sneak into our busy Seattle schedule, is something that we didn’t get much of in Toronto. The good restaurants are in the suburbs, while the downtown ones tended to be expensive and “eh.” I’m sure that if we had continued to hunt for good dim sum, we would have eventually found someplace to satisfy our dumpling cravings. But we didn’t. So there.
While Winnipeg’s lack of size sometimes frustrates Ptichka and me, in our quest for dim sum, it was a good thing. There really is only one great dim sum restaurant in town and it’s a short bus ride away. So we hooked up with a friend and went and enjoyed some of The ‘Peg’s finest. Here is some of the food we consumed:

My favourite dish: Chinese greens in oyster sauce. We’ve tried to replicate this at home and we consistently fail.

Sticky rice. This is another one of my favourite dishes because pork and mushrooms are divine.

A perogy dumpling, which can only exist in Winnipeg, I think. It used a perogy wrapper for the outside and was stuffed with loads of pork. It was a tiny piece of oily, fried heaven.
We’re already planning on our next trip, although it might be a while because we would ideally like to bring all of our most adventurous omnivore friends with us. This will take some doing because most of those people happen to be related to Ptichka and live in the country.

Dim sum – yeah! DH loves it, unfortunately I have an MSG allergy and break out in very nasty spots! But I still crave for it!!
