In the short upstairs hallway from the art room to the top of the stairwell, I had the following internal dialogue:
- You’re making birds because you’re obsessed with them. That’s okay.
- So, where are the trees? You like trees more than you like birds.
- Trees are hard. All that fine cutting and sewing.
- Don’t be a dolt. You don’t have to make bare trees.
- I don’t want to make the standard triangular trees.
- But you like those.
- So?
- So? You don’t have to make those. You could make-
- Oh! Yeah! Those!
- Yeah, those. Dumbarse.
Unfortunately, most of my internal dialogues end with the smart voice calling the dumb voice a dumbarse. I should remedy that because the smart voice doesn’t do much talking. It’s savvy because if it doesn’t talk much, it’s easier to think that it’s smart. That’s how I got through grad school, after all. But then again, the smart voice spent quite a bit of time berating me during grad school. I look back now and sometimes wonder how I ever finished…but that’s really a different post altogether.
Here is one of those trees. I predict many more in the next few days.
And the inspiration wall post is coming. I just need to do some photographing and annotating and writing. Um, yeah, I need to do just about everything for that post still. But first, it’s off to get some more felt.

Heh. I’m thinking about putting these on Etsy next year. I’ve written off this Christmas as a learning experience and have already started planning the goods for Valentine’s Day.
I love trees, too and think these should be a hit. You could even make them for Valentines Day and use little red hearts instead of the red leaves.

That thought process sounds like something out of my own head! I’ve been eyeing up my felt as projects to take with me over the holidays… I’m even more inspired now!
